PERSONAL STATEMENT

Karen Stocks is an oceanographer and data scientist specializing in the documentation, discovery, access, integration, and curation of oceanographic data. Her expertise includes information systems for vessel-based sensors, scientific ocean drilling, biodiversity and biogeography, metagenomics, and ocean observing systems.

CURRENT PROJECTS (SELECT)

Science Support Office (SSO) of the International Ocean Discovery Program, Director of Information Technology and co-PI.  The SSO supports the new International Ocean Discovery Program, the NSF-funded scientific ocean drilling programs investigating the ocean subseafloor. The SSO maintains the Site Survey Data Bank, the data repository supporting the International Ocean Drilling Program’s proposal system, and the IODP proposal submission system, and the IODP informational website.  7/2013–9/2023, $11,965,689, NSF.

CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office (CCHDO) (cchdo.ucsd.edu) Principal Investigator. The CCHDO’s primary mission is to deliver the highest possible quality global CTD and hydrographic data to users. These data are a product of decades of observations from multiple programs, past and present, around the world. The CCHDO performs meticulous curation and dissemination of standardized, well-documented reference-quality CTD, hydrographic, carbon and tracer water column data. 9/2018–8/2023, $3,050,000 NSF and 7/2022–6/2023, $184,710 NOAA.

Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) (www.rvdata.us) co-Principal Investigator. R2R is developing a comprehensive fleet-wide management pipeline for underway data to ensure preservation of and access to our national oceanographic research data resources. 9/2014–8/2019, $4,499,262 NSF.

DeCODER (geocodes.earthcube.org) co-Principal Investigator. The DeCODER project focuses on increasing the discoverability of diverse online geosciences data by standardizing how the datasets are described online with structured, crawlable schema.org. 10/2022-9/2026, $3.2M (collaborative)

FARR RCN (www.farr-rcn.org) co-Principal Investigator. The FAIR in ML, AI Readiness, and Reproducibility Research Coordination Network (FARR) aims to build communities for promoting FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable data and software) practices within the artificial intelligence research arena while also improving methods for improved efficiency and reproducibility. 8/2022-7/2025, $1,260,000 NSF.

EarthCube Office (www.earthcube.org) co-Principal Investigator. EarthCube is transforming the conduct of geosciences research by developing and maintaining a well-connected and facile environment that improves access, sharing, visualization, and analysis of data and related resources. 7/2019-3/2023, $6,640,474 NSF.

SeaView (www.seaviewdata.org) Principal Investigator. SeaView was an NSF-funded EarthCube Integrative Activity Project working with existing data repositories to make oceanographic data more findable, accessible, and interoperable. 9/2015-8/2019, $436,815 NSF.

A Global Census of Marine Life on Seamounts (CenSeam; censeam.niwa.co.nz.). Principal Investigator. CenSeam was a global network of 500 scientists increasing our knowledge of seamount ecosystems through: 1) coordinating and expanding seamount research; 2) fostering new field expeditions; 3) improving data management and data analysis; and 4) facilitating public education and outreach. 2005–2011, $2,000,000, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Towards a distributed information system for marine biology and limnology. Role: co-PI. The goals of this project were to develop and extend a data integration engine (mediator) for earth science data, and apply the engine to ocean biodiversity and lake carbon data to improve our understanding of marine species distributions and lacustrine carbon dynamics processes. $1,495,590, Gordon and Betty Moore Fdn.

Community Cyberinfrastructure for Advanced Microbial Ecology Research and Analysis (CAMERA; camera.calit2.net). Role: Science liaison, requirements assessment, training, outreach. CAMERA created a system to collect, maintain, and disseminate environmental sequence data, associated metadata, pre-computed search results, and associated tools in a high-performance cyberinfrastructure. 2008–2011, Gordon and Betty Moore Fdn.

Marine Metadata Interoperability (MMI; marinemetadata.org).  Role: PI on UCSD award. MMI improved marine data management by providing the best guidance and resources for data management, and developing advanced metadata tools and services needed by the community. 2006–2010, $397,153, NSF.
