The role of the Ocean and Geosciences Data Center at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is to archive and provide access to oceanographic and geosciences data, particularly from SIO vessels. Originally launched by Bill Menard as the Geological Data Center, the GDC has been in operation for more than 40 years. While some historic physical artifacts are carefully preserved, the current emphasis is on digital archiving, in coordination with other national and international programs, to make data broadly discoverable and usable in support of current and future science.
