| Abstract | Midwater trawl sampling in support of CalCOFI acoustic surveys: Stratified midwater trawl sampling will be carried out with an MOHT midwater trawl (5 m^2 mouth opening with depressor and rigid frame) during the summer CalCOFI cruise. Over the 24 hr period of available ship time, four hours will be devoted to acoustic transducer calibration at the end of the cruise, and 20 hr will be spread out over the duration of the cruise to enable sampling on the six core CalCOFI transects. Approximately 14 shallow tows to 200 m depth are planned for the night-time period (1 hr duration for each tow, total operation) and 3 deep tows to about 500 m depth during daytime (approximately 2 hr duration for total tow operation).
